Avalon's Birthday Cruise - Day 2

Day 2 of our cruise was Tuesday, April 26th -- Avalon's Birthday! I already shared a dozen or so pics from the day in this post, but I left out about a hundred (no exaggeration!...I took soooo many pics on this trip)! Here's more from the second day of our cruise!

The birthday girl (with Clover), ready to start our fun day at sea!
Breakfast in the Lido Buffet
This $1 store birthday banner that I brought along fit perfectly over the phony window box of our inside room! Good thing we didn't spring for an ocean view or this wouldn't have been possible! ;)  I sneaked away to decorate our room while Shaun stayed on deck with the girls.
Birthday party animal! Eddie kept me company while I decorated and waited for Daddy and the girls to return.
After breakfast, towel animal theater, an ice carving demonstration and the unveiling of our decorated stateroom, we hit the pool deck per the birthday girl's orders!
Daddy hung out with Eddie while the girls soaked in the hot tub (the pool was still too cold) and mom relaxed poolside with a vodka tonic!
Daddy and Eddie visiting the girls over in the hot tub. Look at how many people are crammed in there! I would have been miserable but the girls loved it! They spent at least an hour in what I [affectionately] dubbed, "the cesspool."(Un/fortunately, there was so much chlorine in it that it faded the girls' new swimsuits!)
Before heading back to our room we made a stop at the "secret" deck at the front of the ship, where a fellow passenger offered to take a family pic. This was me and Shaun's fourth time on the Inspiration but the first time seeking out this little-known spot on board.
Mom and Dad's plan for a little quiet time before dinner didn't exactly pan out...
...but thank goodness we were able to talk them into some "tablet time" so at least WE could rest

Ellie wanted to take our pic
Little brother "relaxing" in his crib
Getting ready for Avalon's birthday dinner (which happened to also be "Elegant Night" in the formal dining room)! It has become a tradition that the girls get to wear a little makeup on formal night of cruises. :)

All made up and ready to go
No makeup for this Dapper Dan
Family selfie in the mirror (minus Ellie, who refused to be part of it) before heading out for dinner
The Elegant Night decor featured silver plastic sea shells, which Eloise swore she could hear the ocean in

Eddie started off the dinner pretty lively...
Family pic during dinner, compliments of our waiter. Eddie is going...
...going...
...gone!
This was only the second time ever that Eddie passed out at the dinner table (the first was on Thanksgiving).
Avalon working on her daily journal page (part of her independent study packet) back in our room after dinner. She was so exhausted from her fun birthday at sea that she actually chose to do homework and go to bed instead of going to the kids club or otherwise party it up for the remainder of her big day. Her birthday might have been coming to an end, but we were only half way through our awesome vacation!

Avalon's Birthday Cruise - Day 1

I can't believe a month has passed since we set sail on Avalon's birthday cruise! Since we have another trip coming up right around the corner, I figured I'd better get my act together and blog about it before I have a backlog of vacation posts (but oh what a good problem to have!).

I have long thought that it would be awesome to celebrate Avalon's birthday in Avalon, the town on Catalina Island that is named after her. ;-) I was browsing the Carnival website one day in February when I logged into our account and noticed we had an amazing offer for a deeply discounted cruise fare... so we figured, why not this year?!

You might remember that we cruised back in December for my brother's birthday...and in May before that...so this was our third family cruise in under a year, sailing the exact same 4-day itinerary to Catalina and Ensenada. I don't think we could ever get sick of it!

We sailed on the Carnival Inspiration this time, as we did last May (and has Shaun and I have done on our own twice before as well), but got to enjoy some new updates to the ship that were made when it was in dry dock in February. What made this cruise a truly new adventure, however, was the fact that we all squeezed into ONE INTERIOR room this time instead of having two connecting outside rooms, as we did on the last two cruises. And you know what... it wasn't too bad!

We set sail on Monday, April 25th and returned on Friday, April 29th. It was an absolutely amazing trip with only one downside...

Our plan to celebrate Avalon's birthday in Avalon was foiled! My heart sank when we were handed this flier upon check-in:

Talk about best laid plans going awry! But fortunately, I was the one most disappointed by the change of plans. After realizing that no one else (including the Birthday girl) cared much about it, it didn't take long for me to get over it. Hey, there's always next year, right? :-)

We sailed through check-in and security without much of a wait at all and were on board before 1pm. We headed straight to our room (M-53) to check out our "cozy" accommodations, and that's where our adventure begins!

First pic in our stateroom! As you can see, a case of the sillies had already begun to set in! The girls changed into their swim suits (which we had packed in our carry-on) and off we went for lunch and some fun in the sun.
The girls asked me to take this pic of them in front of a graphic of a cruise ship in the hall across from our room
Eddie digging into his first meal of the cruise
Avalon was devastated about having to wait until after lunch to swim, but this chocolate milk boosted her spirits
Posing on a couch in route to the pool deck
Mom and Dad with drinks in hand means the cruise has officially begun (Avalon took this pic!)
The pool was ice cold so the girls hit the hot tub instead
While the girls relaxed in the hot tub, Eddie got to know some members of the crew
Eddie was definitely the "MPP" (Most Popular Passenger) from day one!
First visit to one of our favorite spots on the ship... the Waterworks!
Time to dry off and get ready for the muster drill
Trying her life jacket on for size
Life jacket pics are a "must" on every cruise!
After the muster drill it was time for sail away and our first dinner of the cruise

Cheese!
Goofballs :)
Avalon wrote us this heartbreaking note while she and Ellie were in the kid's club after dinner. They were both a little upset when we picked them up after only a little over an hour. :( Luckily it was only first-day jitters (not to mention exhaustion from the long, fun day) and they were excited to go back later in the cruise.
Posing with our first towel animal after returning to our room
This is what a room for five looks like come bedtime. Cozy!
The last pic of Avalon as a 5-year-old! Showered, PJ'd, tucked into bed, and excited for her birthday the next day!

Edward is 18 months old

And just like that you are 18 months old! It has been the fastest one and a half years of my life.

You are constantly expressing your moods, wants and thoughts, but since you only say a handful of words I can't help but still think of you as a baby. A walking, pointing, grunting, growling, squealing, 31-inch tall,  26.4-pound baby with a mouth full of teeth that can rip a slice of pizza to shreds.

You started eating with a spoon and fork a month or so ago, but I only gave them to you after I looked back on some old blog posts and realized that Eloise had been eating with utensils for several months by the time she was your age. Time just got away from me and I hadn't realized you were old enough for that. You do pretty well with them but you are a messy eater regardless of what you eat or how you're eating it. You love to smear your face and hair with food.

Speaking of food, two new words from the past two months are "eat" and "cah-cah"(cracker). "Bah" has evolved to a very clear "bye." "Uh oh" is by far your favorite expression and is your reaction to pretty much everything you hear, whether it be the phone ringing, a loud truck going by, TV or music turning off or on, Gizmo meowing, you get the idea. You also use it more appropriately when you trip, fall, and drop, spill or break something.

And speaking of breaking things, you have actually broken quite a few things as a result of your manhandling. Arms snapped off of sunglasses, headbands cracked in half, doors torn off doll houses, that sort of thing. You are one rough and tumble little boy already.

You are turning into quite the climber.  You learned how to climb up onto Eloise's bottom bunk this week and were soooo proud of yourself; the first time you did it you rolled and lounged around with a big grin on your face and then sat there looking at books for nearly an hour. As of this week I have begun storing your high chair in the laundry room in between meals because I can't keep you from trying to climb it. I have also begun keeping the kiddie folding chairs on top of the table when not in use because you like to drag them all over the house to use as stools to climb up and get into mischief.

You are also quite the chewer, which is great when it comes to eating (you can eat almost everything now and I don't worry about you choking). Otherwise, it's just kinda gross. Around the house I have caught you chewing on things like shoes, vacuum cleaner hose attachments, remote controls, crayons and markers. Outside you are no better; you have been known to chew on sticks and just today you picked up and nibbled on a pine cone for the first time. Neither of your sisters did this so it's a parenting first for me. It's the only reason I occasionally find myself wishing that you were a paci baby like your sisters; I rarely worried about them sticking anything weird in their mouths because they were always plugged up with their pacis.

All those germs finding their way into your mouth have made for a very strong immune system, but in early March you got the sickest you have been to date (though it still wasn't that bad). Avalon was the first to get this strange bug, which consisted of a low-grade fever and watery-turned-crusty eyes, who then passed it to Eloise. It hit you last, and hardest. For several days you awoke in the morning and after naps to your eyelids glued shut with gunk. Besides the discomfort of that, you weren't phased much by it and we didn't even take you to the doctor (though we did call an advice nurse to ensure that your symptoms didn't warrant a doctor's visit).

You LOVE to go outside. I can't open the front or back door without you frantically rushing to it, often while clutching your shoes. Outside you love to swing, crawl/climb the porch stairs, attempt to climb up the slide, go in and out of the playhouse, walk up and run down the slope leading the garage, and walk around picking up sticks and leaves and just enjoying your independence. You also love having me push you in the swing or around the yard on the Smart Trike.

You have evolved into one fantastic sleeper and routinely sleep 8-10 hours though the night. For the first time in many years it seems, I am sleeping a solid 7-8 hours a night without interruption and it feels amazing. (Ironically, however, I am more exhausted than ever during the day!)  You take one 2-3 hour nap every afternoon, which, ever since we returned from our cruise, has been in your crib. Yes, we will soon say goodbye to the cradle swing forever. We are only keeping it around for now because you love to fall asleep to the lullabies it plays. You also motion for me to turn on the music every time I change your diaper (which you still hate, by the way).

You have made life a little busier and crazier over these last couple months and I have a feeling that will be the case for a while. I am really soaking up these last few months of having a "baby" before your speech begins to explode. I am so looking forward to seeing your personality unfold and being able to have conversations with you, but please, stay my baby for just a little while longer! :)

Looking handsome after your first hair cut!(By mom)

That's a breastfed baby for ya (still once a day)!
